The Nissan Rogue Hybrid brings Nissan's e-POWER technology to the Rogue lineup for the first time, and it works differently than the hybrid systems most compact SUV shoppers are used to. Instead of a gasoline engine that helps drive the wheels, the Rogue Hybrid uses a series hybrid design: a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that never connects to the wheels at all. It acts purely as an onboard generator, producing electricity for two separate electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear, that do all of the actual driving.
Because the motors handle propulsion and the engine only generates power, there's no traditional transmission and no gear shifts. The result is instant torque and a driving feel closer to an electric vehicle than a conventional hybrid, without ever needing to plug in. The battery charges itself through the onboard generator and through regenerative braking, so the Rogue Hybrid refuels at any gas station, the same way a standard Rogue does.
All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, with one electric motor dedicated to each axle for near-instant torque response between the front and rear wheels. Nissan's e-Pedal one-pedal driving feature also carries over, letting drivers do most of their accelerating and braking through the accelerator pedal alone by relying on stronger regenerative braking to slow the vehicle down.
Inside, the Rogue Hybrid introduces a redesigned cabin built around a 14.3-inch center touchscreen and a set of P-R-N-D drive-mode buttons that replace the traditional shifter, opening up extra space on the center console.
e-POWER itself isn't new technology for Nissan, even though it's new to the U.S. market. Nissan has already sold millions of e-POWER vehicles worldwide in other markets, and the Rogue Hybrid marks the first time e-POWER has been offered on a Nissan vehicle sold in the United States.
